2 out of 5 stars Bit short on detail   November 18, 2008

I remember using this book in order to study for a basic law examination many years ago when I was studying accountancy. Even as a textbook on English law for accountants, bankers and so on, I found that I needed to supplement it with a lot of additional reading. It's not bad for an introduction to 'A' level or professional exams for non-lawyers for a first book to get an overview but I wouldn't rely on just this alone.

I scimmed and scanned through the latest version and it sill seems rather short of detailed references and cases as well as adequate explanations of the underlying concepts and the reasoning behind judicial decisions.

3 out of 5 stars Good overview of the basic law   August 30, 2001

This book was on my reading list as an introducory text for non-lawyers taking an Msc in Management of Intellectual Property. It covers the basic aspects of English Law in a clear and succinct manner. Significant cases are highlighted in the text so they can easily be picked out. The book explains the law but there is not much information on why judges ruled as they did. I guess it will make a good revision guide, giving you the facts and the relevant case to quote, but I do not feel it has given me a particularly deep understanding. Still it was easy to read, and the next books on the reading list are considerably meatier volumes, so it was nice not to be thrown in the deep end.
